Founded in 1890, the Alliance Française de Melbourne is a not-for-profit association dedicated to the promotion of French language and culture, and the only French cultural centre in Victoria. It is the state’s largest French language centre, with around 4,000 enrolments and more than 70,000 people taking part in its cultural programme in 2025, and the only accredited centre in Victoria for the diplomas issued by the French Ministry of Education.
Its Berthe Mouchette competition, created in 1894 and named for the Alliance’s founder, still draws thousands of students each year to recite French poetry. Under the patronage of the French Embassy, it runs major cultural events including the French Film Festival each March.
